Skin: What’s It Even Doing?

Skin: What’s It Even Doing?

If you’re just getting started with skincare, you might have questions like:

  • “What kind of skin do I have?”
  • “Why does my face feel shiny sometimes but dry in other places?”
  • “Is skincare even that important at my age?”

Spoiler alert: it is! But it doesn’t have to be complicated, especially when you understand what your skin is actually doing every day.

In this post, we’ll walk you through the basics of how your skin works, what makes tween skin different, and why a simple routine can help you glow now and for years to come.

Why Your Skin is Kind of a Big Deal

Let’s start with the basics: your skin is your body’s largest organ. It covers your whole body (duh), but it also has some super important jobs:

  • It protects you from germs, dirt, sun, and environmental stress.
  • It regulates your body temperature (like sweating when you're hot).
  • It senses the world around you through touch.
  • It even helps your body make Vitamin D from sunlight!

The 3 Layers of Your Skin

Even though you can only see the top layer of your skin, there’s a lot happening underneath. Your skin is made up of three main layers, and each one has a job to do.

1. Epidermis (The outer layer you can see)

This is the part of your skin that’s constantly renewing itself. Your epidermis sheds old skin cells and replaces them with new ones, like a tiny skin-recycling center! It also creates a protective barrier to keep bad stuff out (like germs) and good stuff in (like moisture).

Fun fact: You get a totally new outer layer of skin every 28–30 days!

2. Dermis (The middle layer)

Under the epidermis is your dermis, kind of like your skin’s support center. It holds important things like:

  • Blood vessels (that bring nutrients)
  • Hair follicles (where your hair grows from)
  • Sweat glands (to cool you down)
  • Collagen and elastin (which give your skin strength and stretch)

This is the layer that helps you feel sensations, like tickles, burns, or booboos.

3. Hypodermis (The deepest layer)

Also called the subcutaneous layer, the hypodermis is made of fat cells and connective tissue. It helps keep you warm, cushioned, and protected like your body’s built-in hoodie and blanket!

So, What Happens to Your Skin During the Tween Years?

Between ages 9 and 12 (aka “tween” territory), your skin is going through some sneaky changes. Even if you haven’t hit full-blown puberty yet, your body is getting ready for it and your skin is one of the first places you’ll notice.
Here’s what might start happening:

  • Oil glands in your skin become more active (hello, shine!).
  • You may get occasional breakouts, especially around your nose, chin, and forehead (called your T-zone).
  • Your skin might be more sensitive or easily irritated than that of adults.
  • You may feel dry in some spots and oily in others (that’s called combination skin!).

Scottie says:

“My skin got super dry after swimming but then shiny during school. That’s when I realized I needed a routine that worked for my skin, not my mom’s!”

Common Tween Skin Types

Not everyone’s skin is the same! Knowing what kind of skin you have helps you choose the right products and build a routine that actually works.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the most common skin types for tweens:

Skin types, symptoms, and recommended care
Skin Type What It Feels Like What It Needs
Dry Tight, flaky, rough Extra hydration + gentle products
Oily Shiny, especially in the T-zone Oil-balancing + lightweight moisturizer
Combination Oily in some areas, dry in others A little of both — balance is key
Normal Even, balanced, not too oily or dry Gentle care to keep it happy
Sensitive Redness, stinging, or irritation Fragrance-free, calming products

Note: You can have sensitive skin on top of any of these types!

Why Skincare Matters (Even if You Don’t Have “Problems”)

You don’t need to wait until your skin is “bad” to start taking care of it. In fact, the earlier you start healthy habits, the better your skin will be in the long run.
Here’s why skincare is actually important now:

  • Prevents future issues: A simple routine now can help avoid breakouts or irritation later.
  • Protects your skin barrier: Keeping your skin hydrated + protected helps it stay strong.
  • Builds confidence: Taking care of yourself feels good, and that glow shows.
  • Teaches healthy habits: Skincare is a form of self-care that supports mental + physical wellness.

Your Starter Routine (Spoiler: You Only Need 2 Things!)

Taking care of your skin doesn’t mean buying 17 products or watching a million tutorials. For most tweens, all you need is:

1. A moisturizer (like Juice Boost)

Keeps your skin hydrated, soft, and balanced without clogging pores.

2. A daily sunscreen (like Beach Mode SPF 30)

Protects your skin from UV rays, which can cause damage even when it’s cloudy.
Add a gentle cleanser if your skin needs it, and you’re good to go!

Scottie’s Pro Tip:

“I use Juice Boost and Beach Mode every day, even when I’m just at school. It makes my skin feel good, and it only takes like 2 minutes!”

Pro Tips from Skin School

  • Don’t scrub your face hard, be gentle!
  • Always patch test new products if you have sensitive skin.
  • Wash your pillowcase often (your skin touches it every night!).
  • Avoid heavy, perfumey products. They can irritate young skin.
  • Drink water. Seriously. Your skin loves hydration from the inside, too.

💛 Skincare = Confidence

Skincare isn’t just about looking good. It’s about feeling good, too.
When you build a routine that fits your life, your skin feels better, your confidence grows, and you show yourself that you deserve to be taken care of.
